Please follow the following steps:

1) DO NOT PANIC!
2) READ MY ADVICE CAREFULLY
3) READ STEP 1

If you can follow the above 3 steps, everyone will pass with flying colors.

The exam is based on everything covered during the second trimester. You should review your notes and chapters 17 and 18. Review each section except those that cover Latin American and US history. Remember, we covered the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment the French Revolution and the rise of nationalism in Europe beginning with Napoleon. Please refer to step 1 before continuing.

As usual, the test is divided into 3 competencies. Competency 1 deals with your ability to interpret information. You don´t need to memorize anything to pass this part. simply read provided text and illustrations and interpret. To make things even simpler for you, all the questions are multiple choice. The only way you can fail this part is if you have been sleeping through the trimester and cannot read English. Take your time, read carefully and answer ALL multiple choice questions and you will do well. In case you do not believe me, please refer to step 1. Competency 2 deals with your ability to understand how things are interconnected. That is to say how one event effects another. Once again, you will be provided with short readings and pictures just as you requested in class. Read carefully and answer ALL the multiple choice questions. Finally, Competency 3 requires you to analyse and hypothesize (think of solutions to problems). Once more, you will be given short readings and several multiple choice questions based on those readings. Take your time and connect all the information you have gathered from ALL the readings. You will only have to answer a few open ended questions. Advanced students have to answer a short essay questions but standard students are welcome to answer the essay question as a bonus.

THIS TEST IS ALMOST IDENTICAL IN DESIGN TO PREVIOUS TESTS. LOOK BELOW THIS LINE AT TEST QUESTIONS EXAMPLES.

Wednesday October 24, 2012 (the secret word is cash'o'la)

The end of trimester 1 is already fast upon us. Time for your first trimesteral exam. Here is the study guide:

The exam is based on everything covered in class since the beginning of the school year. You should review your notes and the following chapters:
Chapter 6 Sections 2, 3, and 4; chapter 14 Section l, 2 and 3; and chapter 15 Sections l, 2, and 3.

How it will look:

You will be provided readings divided into 2 sections. Use the readings from each section to help you answer the questions that follow. There will be 5 true false questions to begin the competency 1 portion of each section. If the answer is false, you will have to provide the correct answer (only advanced students).

Example:
1. The alhambra palace was designed to instill fear upon any who should gaze at it. T / F

the answer is false of course and advanced students will have to indicate that the palace instilled awe and admiration by any who visited.

There will be several multiple choice questions. You must answer all the questions or risk losing extra points for being careless. You can find most of the answers in the reading portion provided at the beginning of the section. So take your time and look for the answer.

There will be some short answer questions as well. Advanced students must answer 2 while standard students need only answer 1 question out of 5.
Example:

What was the result of years of barbaric tribal warfare among various clans within Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire?
Answer: This caused a Dark Age that allowd more progressive empires to take over territorry in Europe such as Spain by the Moors.

Finally, you will have one outline to create and one short essay question to answer. Both exercises will be based on a scenario. The scenarios will be based on work you have done throuout the trimester. Just keep in mind what our generative topic was and what theme we focused on.

Good luck!

Wednesday September 19, 2012 (the secret word is "strawberry" -tell me the secret word at school tomorrow and win a bonus)

It's already time for your second World test. If you recall from your first test, the number 1 rule to follow is...DO NOT PANIC! The test is only on Chapter 14 section 1. The generative topic is still mutual respect so keep that in mind when doing the test. Again, there are 3 competencies covered in the test.

The first competency is about interpretation. You will read some short text or look at pictures or maps and determine what they mean. All the questions for this part are multiple choice so please answer ALL questions.

Competency 1:
Example:

venn diagram.jpg

How were the reigns of Henry of Navarre and Elizabeth I similar?
a. they were both Huguenots
b. they both followed moderate policies
c. they both made Catholicism the state religion

The answer is obviously 'b'. Both rulers solved religious problems by adopting moderate policies.

The second competency requires you to figure out the correct response to argumentative questions. All these questions are also multiple choice except for two short answer questions at the end. Please answer all the questions, they are easy to figure out especially if you did the assignment given to you earlier this week (see Edmodo assignment "French Wars of Religion")

Competency 2
Example

The Queen has reigned already twenty-six years, and during her reign Parliament has never been held. This year she enters her fifty-third year, as it is said, and she has sent orders through the whole realm to convoke Parliament. The principal cause is, I am told, that the English do not wish the King of Scotland, who is the next to the throne, to be King of England, and wish to know who after the queen’s death is to wear the crown. I have forgotten the exact date, but I believe the opening of Parliament took place on November 25th.”

According to this passage, why did Queen Elizabeth order Parliament to meet?

a.
to discuss the next heir to the throne
c.
to discuss plans for war
b.
to discuss financial matters
d.
to discuss a recently passed law
The answer is obviously 'a'. Do not focus on the words you do not know -like reign or convoke. Instead, try to infer what the main idea of the reading is all about. In this case we can read that the Queen has been around for some 26 years and she is getting old (53 was very old back then). There is a rumor that no one wants the King of Scotland to be the new King of England. So, who will take over once the Queen dies? Another strategy is to follow a process of elimination. Notice that there is no mention of finances (money), war or new laws. As a result, you can eliminate those from being possible answers and simply go for the only answer left.

The final competency involves some writing. I hope you are not allergic to writing. You will be given 2 scenarios and will have to provide a brief proposal for both cases. Use your test sheet to practice. Remember to stay within the space provided and do NOT use liquid paper.

Best of luck.

Friday September 7, 2012

If you want to pass your first WORLD weekly test you must follow some simple rules:

RULE #1 - DO NOT PANIC!
RULE #2 - REVIEW THIS STUDY GUIDE AND FOLLOW MY ADVICE
RULE #3 - ADHERE TO THESE RULES!

The number 1 thing you must remember is not to panic. This test, like any other assigned exercise, is not designed to be impossible. You just need to do the work. Now follow my simple guide and you will do very well on this test -I guarantee.

There are three competencies covered in this test. The first competency is about interpretation. You will read some short text or look at pictures or maps and determine what they mean. All the questions for this part are multiple choice so please answer ALL questions.

Competency 1:
Example:

images.jpg
1.
This famous place of worship is
the largest of its kind in Western
Europe. This place is a

a. basement
b. church
c. mosque
d. none of the above
2.
This place grew in size with each consecutive
ruler enlarged this temple. Why?

It grew in size because of...

a. a growing Muslim population
b. a failure to destroy Christianity
c. a victory over the Visigoths
d. none of the above
1. c/ 2.a_

Note that the answer is c, a mosque for question #1 and the answer is a, a growing Muslim population for question #2.

There will also be short readings and some maps to interpret. but like the image above, all you need to do is read or look at the image and determine what they represent.

The second competency requires you to figure out the correct response to argumentative questions. All these questions are also multiple choice except for two short answer questions at the end. Please answer all the questions, they are easy to figure out especially if you have watched the videos assigned to you and/or read chapter 6 sections 2, 3 and 4.

Competency 2:
Example:
The importance of the Astrolabe cannot be exaggerated. Without this ingenious device that enables the user to map the night sky and therefore determine earthly direction, Christopher Columbus and other navigators may not have discovered the new world.

1. Without the expansion of this empire, Western Europeans may not have discovered America when they had.
a. Ottomans
b. Byzantine
c. Muslim
d. All of the above
If you recall your reading or the video it was the spread of Islam that carried progress and innovation to the West and Europe.

The final competency involves some writing. You will be given 2 scenarios to chose from (pick 1) and write a brief outline to resolve the issue.

Competency 3:
Example:
During the Ummayad Dynasty the Muslim empire expanded as far east as India and as far west as Spain. All was well within this vast empire until non-Arab citizens began complaining that they were not receiving equal treatment. It was true. Arab elites and merchants were given privileges while non-Arabs were taxed harshly and were not given key appointments within the government. Eventually revolts broke out and the empire began its slow decline until the Ottomans revived the empire under Suleiman. As adviser to the caliph (religious leader) who replaced Suleiman the Magnificent after his death, propose a plan to stop the decline of this new Ottoman rule.

Topic:
Supportive Details:

Conclusion:

In your answer you should argue that our generative topic -mutual respect -could play an important role in improving matters. After all, one of the main causes of the previous empire's decline was the lack of respect between Arabs and non-Arabs. Remember to be concise and accurate in your writing.

Please ask me questions if you have any.
